Pretty Mama: A Maternity Wear Start-up Set-Up By Two Sisters

By Gramersi

Pretty Mama: the maternity wear start-up launched in 2018 by Jenny McFadden (who was in her final year at Northumbria University at the time) and Alex McFadden.

The two sisters wanted to design and produce a collection of maternity clothes, especially for breastfeeding mothers. The idea came about, because Alex (who has a fashion degree from Sunderland University) had struggled to find feminine and comfortable clothing, whilst she was pregnant with her daughter.

Their aim, in their own words, was to: “empower mothers on their nursing journey by feeling beautiful, confident and comfortable.”

In March this year, they entered Dragons’ Den seeking £30,000 in exchange for a 20% in the business, and they were offered investment from 4 out of the 5 Dragons (Touker Suleyman, Sara Davies, Peter Jones, and Steven Bartlett).

Since appearing on Dragons’ Den, we have received an overwhelming positive response,” said Jenny.

Pretty Mama has also received business support and advice from Northumbria, including mentoring support through Northumbria Enterprise, and the Business Support 2 (NEBS 2) programme.
